What are the construction rule changes?

The New Zealand government is making changes to construction rules to lower the cost of building new homes.

The main changes are:

  • Recognising building product standards from trusted overseas countries.
  • Accepting building products that comply with overseas standards equivalent to or higher than New Zealand standards.
  • Allowing building products to be certified through reputable certification schemes overseas.

These changes are expected to increase the availability of building products and reduce construction costs.

The new rules will be introduced in the Building (Product Certification) Amendment Bill later this year.
